WWII Hawaii Emergency Bank Note

As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June 2024, collectors across the globe are rushing to secure military commemoratives.

But today, we are offering something that only a few know about let alone own…

During World War Two, the US government were forced to issue emergency bank notes.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, deep concern grew that Japan would launch a full-scale invasion of Hawaii. This ran the risk of all US circulating currency in Hawaii being seized and misused, which would lead to considerable damage to the American economy.

So, the US government had to act fast. They issued emergency $1 Silver certificates for use only in Hawaii, printed with a distinctive brown seal and “HAWAII” overprints on the front and back.

This meant that in the event that the notes were seized, they could be repudiated and were therefore useless to the enemy.

These emergency notes were only issued for two years between 1942 to 1944, meaning they are extremely hard to find.

In fact, they rarely appear on the secondary market, so there are less than 25 available for UK collectors.
