1913 Edward VII Penny Trial Stamp (watermarked)
In 1913, Bruckmann printers of Munich submitted a tender to produce British stamps: the King Edward VII Penny Trial Stamp.
Just 600 were produced as samples to demonstrate the quality of printing, and 100 years later, you can secure one of these scarce unwatermarked stamps today.
Despite being issued during the reign of King George V, the stamps used Edward VII’s portrait to ensure they would not be used for postage.
They were also printed slightly larger than normal for the same reason – adding to their unique status and ensuring they stand out in any collection.
This made a lot of sense at the time, but when World War One broke out, no tenders were ever issued and the stamps were archived, leaving the trial stamp to be filed away for the best part of the next century – unknown and unspoilt.
These stamps are incredibly important as if the trial had been successful, they would have been the first British stamps printed outside of the country.
And considering their remarkable story and philatelic significance, only a limited number are available.
