2021 UK The Griffin of Edward III CERTIFIED BU £5

** NO LONGER AVAILABLE AT THE ROYAL MINT **

In 1953, during her Majesty the Queen’s coronation, Westminster Abbey was guarded by ten fantastical creatures — The Queen’s Beasts. These ten beasts are said to represent the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II.

And in 2021, a £5 coin was released in The Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beasts series, making it the tenth and final beast to be released.

Designed by acclaimed Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark, the reverse of this coin features the Griffin of Edward III.

Combining the king of the beasts with the king of the air, the Griffin signifies courage, strength and guardianship.

What’s more, with its close association to Edward III, the Griffin’s coronation shield depicts Windsor Castle, where Edward founded the Order of the Garter in 1348 — making for a truly significant addition to any royal collection.

As the tenth coin in the series, the Griffin now completes the line-up as all ten beasts stand together at last.
