Jane was born in 1537, to Lady Frances Brandon, the
granddaughter of Henry VII.
Jane was an extremely intelligent, protestant woman, due to her
academic upbringing.
In 1553, Jane married Lord Guildford Dudley. He was the son of
Northumberland, the regent of King Edward VI.
When it became clear that Edward was dying from tuberculosis,
Northumberland wanted to prevent the Catholic Mary from claiming
the throne. So he persuaded Edward to alter the succession line so
that the throne would pass to Jane. He declared Mary and Elizabeth
illegitimate.
Jane acceded to the throne in July 1553, when Edward died.
However, Mary had public support, even Jane's father proclaimed
Mary as queen. Jane relinquished the throne to Mary.
Jane and her husband were imprisoned, and tried for treason. In
November 1553, they were found guilty and sentenced to death, but
the sentence was suspended.
In 1554, they were beheaded due to her father's support for Sir
Thomas Wyatt's rebellion against Mary.
