George was born 3rd June 1865, the second son of Edward VII.

George enjoyed a lucrative career in the Navy for 9 years, but with the death of his older brother in 1892, he had to leave his career to become heir. He married his brothers' fiancée, and they had six children.

George became king in 1910. His reign began amidst a power struggle between government and the House of Lords.

George made many foreign visits during the early years of his reign.

He became popular with the public during World War one, when he made numerous visits to the front line, and those helping the war efforts. He even adopted the name Windsor in 1917, due to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha having Germanic connotations.

In 1922, Ireland became a free state, and with the Statue of Westminster in 1931, it could pass laws without any reference to the laws within the United Kingdom.

In 1932, he started the tradition of the Royal Christmas broadcast, which now happens every year.

George died 20th January 1936, and was succeeded by his son Edward.
