As the last of the Stuart monarchs, Anne was born in 1665 to
James VII.
In 1683 Anne married Prince George of Denmark. They were only
able to produce one living heir, William, who died soon after his
eleventh birthday.
In 1685, Anne's father came to power, but was overthrown in
1688. Anne's sister, Mary, and her husband, William, then acceded
to the throne, and Anne became the heir.
Anne acceded to the throne in 1702.
During her reign, Scotland and England were in a difficult
situation, their parliaments had completely different policies. In
1707, after a great amount of protest, the Treaty of Union was
created. Scotland and England became united with only one
parliament, and Anne became the first sovereign of Great
Britain.
During the final years of Queen Anne's reign, she became
unpopular due to the lack of economic benefits that were expected
from the Treaty of Union, and unhappiness from the incorporating
union, Queen Anne died in 1714. With no child to take the throne,
parliament had to pass the Act of Settlement (1701) to guarantee a
Protestant succession. The German Protestant Prince George, Elector
of Hanover, succeeded to the throne.
