Over 100 years old: The Standing Britannia Silver Florin

The Florin was first introduced under Queen Victoria and is often considered the first “decimal coin” as it was equivalent to 1/10th of a pound, or two shillings. Following the accession of Edward VII to the throne after Queen Victoria’s death, The Royal Mint took an intriguing decision to change the reverse design, which had remained the same for nearly 60 years.

The Standing Britannia

Britannia had been prevalent on UK coinage for hundreds of years, but had never been seen on a Florin. The new reverse design by George William de Saulles depicted a powerful Britannia standing with her trident and shield, against the backdrop of the sea. Her bold stance on a boat, with her gown flowing in the breeze paid tribute to Britain’s naval history.

What’s most intriguing about this coin, is that it was unusual for a coin’s design change to be so dramatic. Changing from a cruciform shield to a completely different theme was unusual, and this deign on the florin was only seen under King Edward VII’s short reign.

Over 100 years old

The Edward VII Silver Florin is now over 100 years old, making it a real historic artefact. The unique design, short period of issue, and its .925 Silver metal content have made it a popular choice among collectors.

In fact it’s become so popular that it’s proving harder and harder to source as the years go on. Therefore we only have a limited number available for Westminster Collectors. If you’d like to add this iconic coin to your collection, you’ll need to act quickly.

Remember, this coin has an unusual and short lived design featuring one of the most iconic figures from British coinage. With a limited number available, you’ll need to act urgently to secure this popular historic coin.
