In 1873 the US Mint began striking what would become the shortest lived coin in United States numismatic history.
The US Silver Trade Dollar
Minted for just 5 years, the US Silver trade Dollar was introduced as a special ‘commercial’ dollar which would facilitate trade in the Far East, issued to compete with the preferred Spanish and Mexican Peso or ‘Eight Reale’.
In total less than 36 million pieces were struck. So trying to find an original of any substantial condition today is almost next to impossible due to heavy circulation within Asian markets, frequent counter-stamping with Chinese characters as well as being melted for their silver content.
That’s why, as a lasting tribute to a currency born of commerce and trade, the East India Company have issued this modern reproduction of the US Silver Trade Dollar.
Modern reproduction with a faithful design
Struck in 1oz Pure Silver, the style still remains faithful to the original, designed by British-born William Barber, Chief engraver of the United States Mint from 1869. The reverse depicts a seated Liberty on bales of cotton, facing ‘East’ towards the Orient and surround by 13 stars to represent the 13 original colonies.
