On 2nd June 1953, a new chapter of Britain began as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, now she is the first British Monarch to reach their 65th Coronation year.
To celebrate this historic 65th Anniversary of the Coronation, The Royal Mint has announced the release of a United Kingdom £5 commemorative coin.
For many centuries now commemorative coins have been struck to mark special occasions and there is one coin that was reserved as a special issue for Monarchs and dignitaries – The Piedfort.
Piedfort coins are the pinnacle of numismatic craftsmanship and are twice the thickness and weight of a standard coin.
Edition limit of 1,953 – Extremely limited edition
£5 Piedforts tend to have significantly lower edition limits than their standard silver proof counterparts. As a result, they are extremely rare and have a history of quick sell-outs – the Sapphire Jubilee £5 Piedfort released last year sold out in just under a week.
This particular issue has a very low single coin edition limit of just 1,953 – LESS THAN A THIRD of the standard silver proof £5 that has a limited edition presentation of 6,500 coins.
Having a significantly lower edition limit than the standard silver proof issue also means that the double-thickness Piedfort edition is likely to be the first of the 65th Coronation Anniversary sell-outs. It's already over 75% SOLD-OUT at the Mint.
