Own the largest circulation coins in British history!
This is a unique opportunity to own two of Britain’s largest ever circulation coins!
The 1797 one penny and two pence were issued as part of an attempt to restore confidence in British currency, therefore the intrinsic value of the metal plus an allowance for the cost of production was made equal to the nominal value of the coin. Their high metal content made these coins significantly heavier and larger than other circulating coinage struck before or since.
As result, they picked up the nickname ‘Cartwheels’.
Australia's FIRST coins!
Interestingly, the Cartwheel Penny was actually the first official coin of Australia! It's incredible to think that these huge coins would have been lugged across the ocean to provide Britain's colonies with their first ever coinage!
Three important numismatic firsts
The coins included in this fascinating set mark three important firsts in British coinage. As well as being the heaviest and largest British coins issued for general circulation, they were also the first copper one penny and two pence issued, the first official British coins struck using steam power and the first time that the figure of Britannia was shown holding a trident rather than a spear.
Limited numbers available
However, as they were struck for just one year only they're very difficult to source, we have a limited number of sets available for UK collectors and they're expected to sell fast.
Your ‘Cartwheel’ one penny and two pence will arrive protected in tamper proof capsules with a deluxe presentation case and an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity.
