In 2008, The Royal Mint released a very limited issue Deluxe Decimal Proof 11 coin collection which contains Proof specimens of the circulating range of United Kingdom coins.
Importantly for collectors, 2008 stands out as an extremely significant year in our numismatic history – this was the year that the reverse designs of our circulating coinage changed from the familiar Christopher Ironside designs to the new ‘Royal Shield of Arms’ designed by Matthew Dent.
An important moment in our coinage history
This Proof set represents some of the last coins struck with Christopher Ironside’s iconic designs on the reverse.
This once-in-a-generation numismatic event caught the attention of collectors worldwide, and to mark the occasion and to commemorate the reverse designs that have Britain well for almost 40 years, The Royal Mint issued a set of 11 coins struck to a Proof Finish.
Struck to a superior Proof finish
Proof coins are often considered the collector’s favorite – their mirrored surface and frosted relief show off the designs in the best possible way. They are struck up to four times with specially polished dies to achieve this effect – and The Royal Mint’s reputation for quality is unmatched.
With an edition limit of JUST 15,000, most of these Proof sets were snapped up by collectors on release and have since disappeared into private collections, which means that back-issues are difficult to acquire for individual collectors.
However, today you have the opportunity to secure one for your collection – but you’ll need to act now!
