** SOLD OUT **
Since 1970, the Royal Mint has released a limited edition annual proof set, with proof versions of the coins issued that year. Today you can own the 1974 Proof set.
A 50p that’s rarer than the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p
In 1974, a tiny number of 50ps were issued exclusively for Royal Mint Proof Sets. That means that none of them went into general circulation, and one of the only ways of owning one is in the 1974 Royal Mint Proof Set.
The 1974 50p has a mintage of just 100,000, which is less than half that of the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p. That also makes it twice as rare.
Minted to the Royal Mint’s unrivalled proof finish
Each coin is struck to the very highest standard proof finish which uses highly polished blanks and specially prepared dies. Each coin is struck more than once to ensure a clear, sharp design that is superior to the coins found in your change. It also means that every coin can be viewed in brilliant detail, perfect for collectors.
In demand with collectors
Because of the time, skill, and craftsmanship involved in striking proof coins, they are issued in low edition limits. Proof sets represent the pinnacle of the Royal Mint’s work, and many collectors strive to add every year-dated proof set to their collection. That makes any year highly sought after.
Limited stock available
We have managed to source a very limited number of these proof sets. They are no longer available at the Royal Mint and are very difficult to track down. We have a small number to offer to our collectors today, but with the high demand we don’t expect them to be available for long.
