The Macaque Monkey Barbary Ape 50p was issued in Gibraltar in 2016.
Originally from the Atlas Mountains and the Rif Mountains of Morocco, the Barbary Macaque population in Gibraltar is the only wild monkey population on the European continent.
These monkeys are widely considered by many to be the top tourist attraction in Gibraltar. The most popular troop is that of Queen’s Gate at the Apes’ Den, where people can get especially close to the monkeys.
The reverse of this coin features a Barbary Macaque Monkey in a seated position. The obverse shows Raphael David Maklouf’s portrayal of Her Majesty the Queen.
Unsurprisingly, these coins have proven to be very popular among collectors and monkey-lovers alike.
Due to the low population of the Island in comparison to the rest of the UK, this coin will almost certainly have a very low mintage figure. Additionally, it is not legal tender in the UK and therefore you will not find it in your change.
Both of these characteristics combined make this coin particularly scarce and collectable.
