The controversial FIRST Australian Kangaroo Stamp: JUST £14.99

The Kangaroo and Map Stamp was first issued in 1913 and is the cornerstone of an incredibly fast-moving and valuable area of Aussie philately known as ‘Kangaroos’.

Australian equivalent of the Penny Black

Before Australia was part of the Commonwealth stamps were issued for each of the Australian States, but in 1913 the newly formed Commonwealth of Australia created a new stamp to unite Australia.

Featuring the outline of Australia with the iconic image of a Kangaroo inside the map, the famous 'roo and map' was born. But it faced controversy as the omittance of a portrait of the monarch meant that critics saw it as anti-British.

One of the most iconic Australian Stamps

Despite the criticism it faced, the Kangaroo and Map stamp outlasted it's competitors and has since become one of the most iconic and enduring national stamps, with many collectors striving to add one to their collection.
