On Wednesday the 29th July 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral in London, a royal Prince married his bride from the Spencer family in one of the most celebrated royal weddings in British history. The "wedding of the century" was watched on TV by an estimated 750 million people and events were held around the Commonwealth to mark the union.
Many different coins were struck world-wide to commemorate the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, including this crown-sized £2 coin from the Bailiwick of Jersey.
Up until 1998, Jersey £2 coins were much larger than the coins that can be found in circulation today. They were issued as special crown-sized commemoratives to mark the most significant anniversaries and celebrations.
The reverse design of this £2 coin by Michael Rizzello features the conjoined portrait of the couple, framed by the words "Royal Wedding" and the date of the special day. The obverse by Arnold Machin features the second crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Jersey coinage is not legal tender in the UK, but the lower mintage figures of Jersey coins compared to UK mintages makes them particularly scarce and sought after.
Please note this coin has been priced according to its scarcity and current market value.
