The Alan Turing Silver 50p: Why you need to own one

Alan Turing was famous for his leading role at Bletchley Park breaking Nazi codes during the Second World War. It’s believed that his team's work saved millions of lives by securing and deciphering information from German forces.

And now, in special tribute, The Royal Mint has issued this 50p coin. What you have the chance to own here though, is the incredibly limited 925/1000 Sterling Silver Proof edition.

There’s lots more to tell about this coin (including secret hidden codes), but what is worth noting is the edition limit. Because it’s eye-catchingly low.

As a comparison, the recent Platinum Jubilee Silver 50p had an edition limit of 5,500 and it sold out in less than 24 hours. The 2019 the Stephen Hawking 50p had the same edition limit. It too SOLD OUT.

But this Alan Turing Silver Proof 50p has an edition limit of only 3,000. They will all go. And quickly.

Secure this special Silver Proof Edition in official Royal Mint packaging at The Royal Mint’s official issue price of JUST £57.50 (+p&p).

And finally, the three codes to decipher are…

Code 1. GEARS.GRIN.THAN Every 3-square-meter of the world has been given a unique combination of three words. Go to ‘whatthreewords’ to find out where Turing studied at University!

Code 2. ‘ONLY A FORETASTE OF WHAT IS TO COME’ Turing’s quote in The Times, June 1949.

Code 3. Matt Dent and Christian Davies The coin designers initials!
