The Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom, are 140 ceremonial objects which include the regalia and vestments worn by British Kings and Queen’s at their coronations.
As a symbol of 800 years of monarchy, these Crown Jewels are the only working set in Europe and the collection is the most historically complete of any regalia in the world.
So precious are these Jewels, they are kept in The Tower of London under armed guard.
To commemorate this breath-taking collection of jewels that is a magnet for tourists all over the world, The Royal Mint has issued the second coin in their Tower of London Collection – The 2019 Crown Jewels £5.
This coin celebrates a historical and iconic part of British and Royal heritage.
The crown featured on the reverse of the Crown Jewels £5 coin, designed by Glyn Davies, is that of Mary of Modena, who was the wife of James II, King of England and Ireland. Three crowns were made for her by the goldsmith Richard De Beauvoir in 1685: a coronation crown, a state crown and a diadem.
Although, the coronation crown no longer exists but the other two pieces reside with the main collection of Crown Jewels within the Tower of London.
The obverse shows a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark.
