To celebrate the ancestral beasts of heraldry, myth and legend that have watched over Her Majesty the Queen throughout her unprecedented reign, these UK £5 coins feature the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland. 

The Lion on England is a traditional symbol of bravery, strength and valour and is one of the earliest animals to appear in royal emblems. 

The Unicorn of Scotland is an enduring symbol of strength and beauty. It first appeared on Scottish heraldry in the twelfth century, after William I created an early form of the Scottish Coat of Arms.
