The Queen Victoria 'Gothic' Silver Florin

A collector's favourite - The famous Queen Victoria 'Gothic' Silver Florin

The Florin was first issued during the reign of Queen Victoria, and was introduced as an early trial for decimal currency. Valued at one tenth of a pound, the names ‘Centum, Decade and Dime’ were suggested before the name Florin was formally adopted.

Although we are now accustomed to seeing a crowned monarch on our coinage, the portrait of Victoria wearing a crown was unusual to the general public and it was the first coin to feature a crowned monarch for over 200 years.

A collector's favourite

The coin earned its name from the distinctive Gothic-style inscription on the obverse side. This features a combination of upper and lower-case letters and Roman Numerals to signify the date which are both very unusual features for a British coin.

The Gothic Florin is a firm favourite with British coin collectors for its originality, and unique style. However, our stock of this classic coin is limited so please don't delay your reservation!
