Philip II of Macedon was born in 382 BC. In 359 he seized the throne and set about conquering his neighbours. In 338 BC at Chaeronea Philip met and utterly defeated the combined armies of Athens and Thebes and all Greece now lay at his feet. He planned to invade Persia but in 336 BC he was assassinated.
His son Alexander acceded to the throne. Not yet twenty years of age, he showed he had inherited all his father’s ruthlessness and military genius. He created a huge empire from India to the Mediterranean by the time he was 32.
