The Bank of England announced in 1988 that a new series of English banknotes would be produced. They were designed by Roger Withington, and were to be introduced between 1990 and 1994.
The notes were all to feature historical figures on the reverse. The £20 note featured physicist and chemist Michael Faraday. (His portrait was later replaced with Edward Elgar)
