The Farthing first appeared in our coinage during the reign of Edward I in 1279 and was made of silver. Farthings continued to be produced in small quantities for most monarchs up to Edward VI in about 1553.
Farthings did not return to our coinage until the reign of James I and were no longer issued in Silver but in Copper. In 1672, Britannia first appeared on the farthing where she became a mainstay of farthings up until 1937 when the wren replaced her.
