The prestigious Egyptian Arch Bridge, featured on the coin, was built for the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway Company in 1851. Because of the nineteenth century Irish industrial revolution a railway link between between the two major cities became necessary to sustain economic development. Because of its historic status and accomplished engineer and designer Sir John Benjamin Macneill engraver Edwina Ellis, who has designed all four new £1 coin designs, chose to represent the Egyptian Arch railway bridge on the coin.
