Monarchy Through the Ages
The British Monarchy has a long and eventful history dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries, in the times of Alfred the Great, who started to develop governmental systems that were centralised. These systems developed further following the Norman Conquest, the era in which Parliament was first born.
Up until 1603, the English and Scottish crowns were separate entities. Then following the accession of King James I of England, who was also King James VI in Scotland, the United Kingdom fell under the reign of a single monarch.
