In 1608, Samuel de Champlain landed on the shores of the St Lawrence River at a place the Algonquin people called Kebek. Champlain knew it was the ideal location for a fur trading post. Previous attempts at establishing a colony in this part of the New World had been fruitless. Although the colony faced many hardships, it did begin to flourish and by the mid 1800s it had become a bustling maritime city and the third largest in North America.
