The Normandy Landings – codenamed Operation Overlord – were the largest naval, air and land assault in military history. They are labelled as the ‘beginning of the end of the war in Europe’, with over 150,000 troops landing on over 50 miles of beach along Normandy to liberate north-west Europe from German occupation.
