1997 UK Golden Wedding £5 Coin
Basket-icon0

The first double portrait since the 17th century...

The precedent of a coin for the Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1972 was followed by a £5 coin for the Golden Anniversary in 1997, but the design broke entirely new ground.

It marked a startling departure from recent practice in that it had a jugate (double portrait) obverse which has not been used since the reign of William and Mary in the late 17th Century.

On 9th May 1997, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited The Royal Mint in South Wales where Her Majesty struck the very first of these £5 coins.
