First struck in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII, the Sovereign coin came to pre-eminence in the 19th Century as it helped fuel the expansion of the British Empire under Queen Victoria. Not seen in circulation in Britain since the outbreak of World War One, the Sovereign has become one of the most popular and collected coins in the world.

The George V Sovereign was minted up until 1914 at the London branch of the Royal Mint. Production ceased because of the outbreak of the First World War. The coin was struck in London in just one further year of the reign, 1925.
