First struck in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII, the Sovereign coin came to pre-eminence in the 19th Century as it helped fuel the expansion of the British Empire under Queen Victoria. Not seen in circulation in Britain since the outbreak of World War One, the Sovereign has become one of the most popular and collected coins in the world.

The Queen Victoria Young Head St. George & the Dragon Sovereign was first struck in 1871 and then regularly until 1885. This was the first Queen Victoria Sovereign to feature the Pistrucci classic St. George & the Dragon Design.

This was the last Sovereign type to be struck during the reign of Queen Victoria. It features, what has been said to be, a more realistic effigy of the elderly Queen on the reverse. It was issued between 1893 and 1901.
